The Centre is already a meeting place at the heart of the village, and our Gardening Club and volunteers have been working to make the site more attractive. Keep Wales Tidy’s support will allow us to build on that work, add more planting and habitats for nature, and make the most of the space we have.

Some of the raised beds are already in place and have been designed to be easily accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The base for the polytunnel has been installed, and a new shed will soon become part of the growing area too.

But this will not simply be a garden to look at.

The hope is to create a garden that belongs to the whole community — somewhere people can help to grow, learn, chat and, best of all, share the harvest.

Our vision is for seasonal produce to be available for local people to use. The sort of place where, one day, someone might think:

“Oh, I forgot to buy lettuce… never mind, I’ll pop up to the Centre and see what’s available.”

It might be lettuce, a few herbs, a courgette or a handful of beans — whatever happens to be in season and ready to pick. Rather than the produce belonging to individuals, the idea is to grow together and share together.

The project also builds on the work of the Centre’s Gardening Club and gives more people the opportunity to take part — whether by planting, watering, harvesting, learning a new skill or simply enjoying seeing what is growing.

The Food Growing Package will also help us make the site more welcoming for nature, with opportunities for fruit trees and wildflowers, composting and creating valuable habitats for wildlife.

“It’s lovely to have the opportunity to do something that benefits nature and the village at the same time. We have a small but very enthusiastic group of volunteers in Carreglefn — and, as usual, once somebody suggests an idea, it isn’t long before somebody else has found a spade!”

Since 2020, Keep Wales Tidy has supported the creation, restoration and enhancement of more than 2,000 gardens across Wales through its Local Places for Nature scheme.

Owen Derbyshire, Chief Executive of Keep Wales Tidy, said:

“These gardens make a real difference – creating habitats for wildlife while also giving people the opportunity to connect with nature, improve their wellbeing and strengthen community connections.

“We’re excited to see how the garden develops and hope it will inspire others in the area to get involved.”

The initiative is part of the Welsh Government’s wider Local Places for Nature fund, which is committed to creating, restoring and enhancing nature ‘on your doorstep’.

Tyfu rhywbeth arbennig yng Nghareglefn
